Floral Care Tips

How to care for your Wild Blossoms

It’s not always easy caring for cut flowers or knowing what to do with them when you get them home so I thought I would jot a few tips down to help.

Remove the packaging

Firstly, unwrap your cut flowers and remove from any packaging (particularly plastic and rubber bands or ties) and place them in water as soon as you can.

Find a vase for your flowers

Find a vase or jar that has a wider top than the bouquet so your flowers can breathe between each stem. Make sure the vase/jar is clean as this will impact on the longevity and if needed clean with a little dishwashing liquid.

Flowers like water, not to hot, not too cold!

Fill the vase with fresh clean water, at room temperature is best at least half way up the vase ensuring all stems are submerged and not flat against the vase base.

Add in a flower food sachet if you have one. If not, fresh clean water is still the best thing. No need to add anything else.

Trim the stems from the bottom

Fresh florals generally like to be well hydrated. Sometimes their stems clog or break which means they can’t absorb water to stay hydrated, so regular trimming of stems and replacing water daily is the key to optimal longevity of your blooms. Trim the ends of each stem by about 2cm and cut on an angle. This will ensure maximum absorption.

Remove any leaves or what I call “hangy off bits“ on the stems to ensure they are clean below the water line. If there are leaves, bits of foliage etc these will dirty the water increase the bacteria and reduce the longevity.

Have a play and arrange the stems in the vase

Arrange the stems in the vase to what feels right for you and in the space for where you will place them. Some stems are fragile so be mindful of this and ensure the right vase is chosen to support them but is not too crowded.

The placement and room location will impact on their longevity.

Avoid direct sunlight or a position directly in the sun or near a heat source as this will dramatically reduce their longevity.

Some florals don’t like a drafty position either.

And don’t forget the dog too and their tails!

Keep them away from direct sunlight, fruit and compost bins!

Another tip is that a lot of florals are ethylene sensitive and don’t like being near fruit or compost bins so avoid sitting on the kitchen bench right next to your fruit bowl!

For best results trim stems every couple of days and ideally replace with fresh water everyday. Keep in a cool spot.

Enjoy!
